R.E.M.

Monday, October 20th, 2008

R.E.M. is re-releasing it’s first album “Murmur” which is exactly twenty five years old this year. As it was said by Pitchfork the album shall be made on two disks (I.R.S./UMe record label) on November 25. The first CD will include a new remastered version, and the second one an unknown 1983 performance in Toronto. During that concert besides playing songs from “Murmur” they’ve performed Velvet Underground’s song “There She Goes Again”, and some songs from their mini-album “Chronic Town”. Also, this release will be accompanied with the album producer’s interviews – Mitch Easter and Don Dixon. Many bands are trying to make their old stuff going and going… Of course it’s very cool, but some critics believe that the biggest purpose is to make more money off the old records, plus instead of kicking twenty five years old albums it will be much better to use the same energy on producing the new bands. Who knows?

“Murmur” is being re-released for the second time so far. The first time it happened back in 1993 in dedication to it’s tenth anniversary. Currently, R.E.M. is in the midst of their world tour supporting the new studio album “Accelerate”.

Eminem Is Preparing Something New

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Eminem had announced a wish to rename his new album, which is about to be released quite soon. It’s going to be called “Relapse”, said Billboard. Sirius radio station was the first one to hear and broadcast this news during Eminem’s presentation of his book “The Way I Am”. Also, he had exposed a new song from the upcoming album - “I’m Having a Relapse”. Previously it was said that rapper’s new work will be named “King Mathers”.  Nevertheless, he didn’t identify the exact release date, so most likely it’s going to appear in stores sometime in the beginning of 2009, but some people expect to see it in December. Haven’t heard from this guy in a long time and let’s check out what he is getting prepared this time. Shall his new work be less rebelious and more knowledgeable?

Eminem’s last album “Encore” was released back in 2004 and sold 5,1 million copies worldwide. In 2005 he just collected his best stuff under the title “Curtain Call: The Hits”.

“Tonight”

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Franz Ferdinand announces the release of it’s third album, said New Musical Express. This new work is going to be called “Tonight” and is about to hit European stores on January 26, 2009. North American release shall take place on the following day. Also, due to some traditional pre-release information leaks (and often mp3 stealings) NME quickly found the upcoming album’s track list. It will include twelve songs (most of them were produced by Dan Carey). Some of them were already played by the band during it’s recent concerts. This group shows creative productivity again and again – three great albums in four years.

1. ‘Ulysses’

2. ‘Turn It On’

3. ‘Kiss Me’

4. ‘Twilight Omens’

5. ‘Send Him Away’

6. ‘Live Alone’

7. ‘Bite Hard’

8. ‘What She Came For’

9. ‘Cant’t Stop Feeling’

10. ‘Lucid Dreams’

11. ‘Dream Again’

12. ‘Katherine Kiss Me’

Jack White Is In Denial Too

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

The White Stripes and The Raconteurs leader Jack White has denied rumours about his plans to replace Robert Plant during the upcoming Led Zeppelin’s world tour, said Gigwise. On White’s opinion Led Zeppelin without Plant simply cannot exist as a group. “I do not believe you can have a band called Led Zeppelin, singing Zeppelin songs, without Plant”, he noted.

After Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Johns and Jason Bonham have performed in London last December all kinds of people are making up all kinds of rumours about this band’s reunion. Some say that Plant will perform with them during the world tour, some are just placing other singers on his place, and no one was correct in these contemplations so far. Robert Plant has denied all of these talks by saying that it’s “frustrating and ridiculous” and that he “will not be touring or recording with Led Zeppelin”. However, everyone is sure that there will be more rumours and talks, probably until the end of time.

Nine Inch Nails Go Through Changes

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Nine Inch Nails drummer Josh Freese is leaving the band, said Gigwise. Following the band’s leader’s words (Trent Reznor), Josh who is playing with them since 2005 will say goodbuy to his collegues during the North American tour, which is going to start on October 18 and shall last until the midst of December. Everybody is contemplating on various reasons for Freese to leave this band, but Reznor has underlined the fact that he still remains to be good a friend. Who should become the next drummer is not known so far. Trent has specifically noted, “Josh Freese fans, be sure to check out a show on the upcoming North American leg of the tour, as sadly they will be the last ones he’s playing with us.”

In the beginning of summer they’ve already made some changes in the lineup. The bassist Rich Fauns was replaced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen who previously has played with Beck and Garbage. The only constant participant is Trent Reznor himself who is practically representing the band. Everyone else comes and goes all the time.

EMI Follows Everybody Else

Monday, October 13th, 2008

EMI record label is planning to start it’s own online music service by the end of this year. It shall also include some free music content, said Reuters. It seems that all kinds of record companies are slowly, but surely try to explore the Internet as a source for selling music. CD days are fading away, and it becomes more obvious every year. Mp3 revolution is simply unstoppable. This new service will be located at their official website, which is currently used only to post news articles and all sorts of the relevant information about music industry. Company’s representatives are calling this project “experimental laboratory”, and everyone can only say good luck to them. It means all kinds of things and possibly the major one is to try something what everybody is doing these days –  the online distribution of music versus CDs.

By now EMI is participating in a number of similar projects. For example, the biggest one so far is Comes With Music (Nokia). Buying an expensive cell phone gives it’s owners a free access to their music catalogue during one year. They also work together with YouTube and MySpace Music.

McCartney Makes It Fast

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Sir Paul McCartney’s new single “Nothing Too Much, Just Out Of Sight” is now available online for free. This song is going to be the part of his new project “The Fireman”, and it is now accessible on the New Musical Expresse’s web site. “The Fireman” also includes Martin Glover, the bassist from Killing Joke who is better known under his nickname Youth. On November 24 musicians are planning to release the album “Electric Arguments” which is going to be “The Fireman’s” third studio album. It’s going to incorporate thirteen electronic tracks. The best part about it is the fact that each track was written and recorded in one day. One of these songs – “Lifelong Passion (Sail Away)” was already presented on McCartney’s personal web site. McCartney thinks that this record turned to be so unusual and strange that it may change his music career forever.

Foo Fighters Got Angry

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Foo Fighters have shown their dissatisfaction with the fact that John McCain had used their song “My Hero” during one of his public speeches, said Billboard. Definitely this presidential candidate doesn’t know this song and most likely barely knows who Foo Fighters are, but his organizers shoud’ve be more conscious about it. “It’s frustrating and infuriating that someone who claims to speak for the American people would repeatedly show such little respect for creativity and intellectual property,” the band said in their official announcement. They’ve also added, “The saddest thing about this is that ‘My Hero’ was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential. To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song.”

Previously, the band Heat got quite angry with Sarah Palin who used their song “Barracuda” without any legal agreement. Jackson Brown even took the legal action against McCain when this presidential candidate incorporated his song “Running on Empty” into a speech. So, Foo Fighters are not the first ones to get mad at these political people.
